My comments on tutoring Elementary Study Skills : As a life-long learner myself, I find this area vital to share with students. Study skills are skills they will use forever, when reading a news paper, critically assessing on-line information, etc. I've been a successful student all my life and share my own strategies for learning.

I treat children with the same respect and dignity that I treat adults, regardless of their age. I don't use "baby voices," as my goal is to elevate them to their highest academic levels. I've been told I'm a "cool" teacher by students because I treat them "like people, not kids." I use humor whenever appropriate, if that "hooks" a student. I do whatever is necessary to engage the individual personalities of each child and endeavor to make whatever it is I'm teaching them meaningful to their immediate lives.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Study Skills : Study skills enable good students to become great students. Simple things like having a specific, comfortable, quiet place to study and an awareness of study skills behaviors decrease study time and increase learning pleasure.

I have a hands on personal approach to learning. I believe many children get"lost"in the system and need individual skills and strategies to catch up and feel good about themselves as legitimate learners and doers."I can't" means "I won't" - attitude rather than ability and a fear of failure. Once a relationship of hope and increasing ability becomes apparent, most kids begin to care and thrive again. I use Montessori philosophy as well as some manipulatives with auditory and visual strategies to support concrete learning.
