I first went to study in Germany as an academic exchange student in 1994. Upon completion of my BA from Bellarmine University in '95, I moved to Germany to pursue graduate studies in Sociology and Philosophy. Although I did not end up getting a graduate degree, I studied at the University of Marburg from 1994-1998, lived one year in Strasbourg,studying french, and then studied at the University of Freiburg from 1999-2009. I lived exclusively in the German language for more than 10 years(all writing, reading, listening and speaking). More focused on comprehension and nuances of grammatical expression. Probably not best for someone with 0 German education, but for those who have some foreknowledge but lack practice. Conversational and writing expertise(I used to help Germans write their term-papers in German). So target audience would be intermediate to advanced German language learners.

I worked as a synthetic organic chemist at Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company for five years. I spent the next 20+ years as a stay-at-home mom and homeschooler, teaching my three children from kindergarten until they graduated from high school.(My two oldest are now college graduates and the third is presently in college.) During my years of homeschooling, I taught both chemistry and biology to high school students in our homeschool group. I have also tutored friends who were in nursing programs and struggling with chemistry. I enjoy algebra and geometry and have done some tutoring in each subject. I really enjoy tutoring. Tutoring German in College was the first time for me. I soon realized that I was helping very much and really enjoyed every session. I tutored in many different ways, because every student needed help in different areas. I met students one on one a few times per week and helped them prepare for tests, do homework, and understand the language. Even though I have only tutored adults, I feel confident that I could tutor students at any age level. I earned two bachelor degrees. A BA in German and political science. I took German throughout my college career and also studied for a year in Germany. While being a student, I tutored German to students that were beginning to learn German at the university level.

I enjoy the German language very much and love explaining how it works to students. Though students learn in different ways, practicing both written and conversational German is imperative to be successful in mastering the language. As a student of German at Bellarmine University, I was able to learn the German language through immersion experiences in Austria and Germany. I also studied German grammar and literature in depth through classes at Bellarmine. I was a tutor in the Academic Resource Center for two years as I was completing my degree and continued to work with students for a year after my graduation.

Having worked in supplemental education for quite some time, I have learned to hone in on the unique understanding of each individual student's needs. I enyoy working with adults as well as children, diagnosing the fundamental needs and moving forward at each individual student's pace. My teaching style differs somewhat based on the student I am working with. An energetic, confidence-boosting style is the approach that I prefer, but I also understand that you must build rapport with your students to be able to do that.
