As, a graduate with a Bachelor's of Art's in psychology, I realized I wanted to go back to school and teach. I loved working with children and have done so since the age of 16. I started working in a summer school program as a one-on-one aide to an autistic child. It is of the utmost importance that a student understands the separate components of a theory or process in order to comprehend the larger picture. Therefore, I believe rote learning seriously prohibits true understanding for many students. My ultimate aim would be to teach the student how to successfully learn on his own. I would first determine the set of circumstances unique to each student. For example, are they far behind their class or just having problems grasping some concepts? I would modify my teaching style depending on the situation, but in general I identify facts that need to be memorized and concepts that need to be understood. We would work through material, in a textbook, for example. Finally the student must apply logic and related skills (algebra, for example) needed for problem solving. Problem solving ties facts and concepts together and brings a deeper comprehension of and familiarity with the subject.
