Musical is one of my top subjects! Music reading & theory, choral music (teaching, arranging, reading)

Fun, interactive, empowering!
I split my time between running a fantastic youth leadership development non-profit (facilitating workshops in creating positive school climate, community activism, and substance abuse/addiction education) and directing musical theatre. Musical is one of my top subjects!

As the Director of Curriculum and Program Development as well as the lead instructor for two music schools, my background has seen me teaching about 70 students a week while implementing several programs that focus on the quality and administration of all academic programs in the school. These programs offer opportunities for students to focus on songwriting with a strong emphasis on theory and applied musical knowledge. The programs allow students to develop group etiquette, arranging skills, and an understanding of moderate to advanced level theory while learning about the studio experience. The experience as a Director combined with graduate study has allowed me to be involved in the development of instruction materials, level requirements, improvement in the school’s methods of composition teaching, teacher hiring, and the evaluation of fellow instructors. Understanding how ... read more

In the classroom I rely on traditional lecture, supplemented by Powerpoint presentations, animations, and lists and diagrams on the white board. I usually assign a research paper. In the last few semesters I've implemented through Blackboard some online testing, as well as tutorial "homework" quizzes, where the students get feedback directing them to coverage of particular sections of the text. I always try to make students aware of how the detailed, technical concepts of the moment fit into the "big picture," making references both to material previously covered and to material yet to come.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an early childhood teacher, I have had several opportunities to help children (school age), to do homework. I also was a tutor in high school to a boy for just Algebra, which then turned around to being all of his subjects and helping him keep on track. The hardest thing for me was that he had only lived in the U.S. for four years, and had trouble speaking English. After each session of tutoring, I would grab the Scrabble board, which encouraged him to use more words, learn new words, and have fun while doing so.
I like to get to the point of certain problems, such as reading the child/student when I see them, ask them some questions about the subjects they need help in and why they need help. I have worked with Infants-School age for over 5 years, and enjoy being there to help someone in need. I believe in giving back, because so many of us are blessed already.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a passion for teaching and working with students, and I am highly energetic and enthusiastic in the classroom. I make it a priority to help students understand that even if a subject isn't enjoyable to them, it is still rewarding to achieve success with it. I make an effort to adapt to each students learning style, whether visual, kinesthetic, auditory, or something different. By reaching out to the student and engaging with them as an individual, I am able to help them develop and understanding of the content which works best for them. If my student can walk away knowing not just more about their subject, but more about how they function as a learner, then I've done my job.

My teaching style starts with designing a curriculum that not only matches aptitudes but also the goals of individual students. My teaching style is more along the lines of the Montessori system. Given the freedom and much direction from the tutor, the student will often "discover" the essence of the lesson. In discovering the essence of the lesson, the student will take ownership. In taking ownership, the student in turn will develop pride, self worth, and a thirst for more knowledge and more successes.
I have a passion for knowledge, and have tutored high school and college students in the area of History, reading, and writing composition. I love teaching, and watching the student progress and excel!

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all children in this country have a right to a world class education. I also believe that education is a partnership between the teachers, parents and students but, understand that due to economic and social conditions not all parents are as active in their child education. I have tutored children in Reading and Math and I have often been told that I try to make learning as easy as possible by relating the topics being taught to topics that the students encounter in there every day lives
I have been working with children as a baseball coach and softball umpire for over 25 years and often parents have told me that I must be a teacher as I worked so well with children. Five years ago I decided to change careers from management and go into education. I went back to school and completed a masters program in elementary education with a 3.8 G.P.A. A Little Bit About Me...

I think one of the most important qualities for a teacher is to have a radiant enthusiasm for the subject you are teaching. After all, how can you get the students excited to learn, if you are not excited about the material you are teaching? You also need to be observant and able to identify how your students learn best and cater to their different learning styles. Finally and mostly importantly, a good teacher is patient and believes in their students' potentials and enthusiastically aids their students in reaching those potentials.

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with two bachelor's degrees. One degree is in Spanish and I consider myself completely fluent, especially having spent a semester in Costa Rica. During this time I volunteered at a school teaching students ages 5 through 18 English at different levels. My other degree is in Social Thought and Political Economy which required a lot of writing, generally 15 to 25 page papers per class. It is a major dedicated to social change and I learned subjects in all areas including History, Current Affairs, Politics and Political Science.
I have been a gymnastics instructor for about eight years which has helped in shaping my teaching style. I love to push children in a supportive manner so that they can believe in themselves and truly get the most of their education. Although I believe in some degree of structure, I am very flexible in my teaching style. Every student is different - I work with each one individually to determine their goals and then develop an appropriate, unique program. Children learn best by actively participating in the material. I try to engage them as much as possible, whether it be with a lively discussion about music history, practicing and performing a piece of music until we are both satisfied with the result, or hearing and speaking French instead of simply memorizing the grammatical rules of the language.
Having just graduated last year (May, '09) from Tufts University with a Bachelor's degree in music, I have an extensive, solid knowledge of both music theory and music history.
