I believe children learn best when they can form a connection to their school work. Writing skills can be improved by using topics that are relevant to the student's life. When working on Reading skills I often use high interest topics such as the arts, sports, computers and science to encourage students to excel. Math can also become more meaningful by using real life situations and manipulatives. It is my goal to increase students' self esteem by providing situations in which they can succeed. During my 23 years of teaching I implemented Kindergarten through 6th grade New York State curriculum in a classroom setting. I tend to prefer lectures combined with textbook assignments as opposed to teaching either using films, powerpoint presentations or computers. I work best with motivated students, even those with lower abilities, though I teach exclusively at the high school level and above. I am patient and one of my greatest assets is in analology; I have a profound ability to take complex ideas and make them simple. I began teaching in fifth grade when my science teacher conceded that I knew more about sharks than he did, so when we got to that lesson, I took over for two days. When helping others, I do it two ways. I tell them how to do it and guide them through it. Other times, I show them how to do it. However, I do not do it for them. As a central New York native I decided to stay in the area and go to college at Syracuse University. While at Syracuse I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree as well as an Art Education Initial certification degree. I enjoyed Syracuse so much that I stayed for my graduate work and earned my MS in Art Education. During my 5 years at Syracuse University I particiapated in various roles working with children. I was a literacy tutor, art workshop teacher, and summer camp teacher. I enjoy working with students of all ages. I attended Williams College in Williamstown Mass and studied economics, studio art, and creative writing. Following graduation with a BA degree in 1981, I worked for two seasons as a substitute high school and middle schoolteacher. I covered math, science, English, and the arts, as well as phys ed. My approach to teaching art is philosophical at its core because creativity belongs to being. The rules of art are derived from the laws of Nature. My philosophy of teaching art is based on learning to allow the relationship between art and the natural world to emerge in a way that one can be open to and follow the dictates of his or her own experience with making art.
