Each individual is different. Therefore, you have to know the person first in order to apply a teaching style. Age, gender, and subject matter are some elements that influence how a person learns. Some people learn visually, some people learn by practicing, some people don't want to learn. My style varies according to the individual and what he or she likes or dislikes. As a tutor my role can be from formal authority, demonstrator, facilitator and delegator. Key elements in the classroom: 1) facilitate interaction and 2) delivery of the content to student. I have tutored through the organization Literacy Volunteers in Flagstaff and Lake Havasu. Additionally, I tutored English in a refugee camp in Zambia, when I was with the Peace Corps. While living in Bangladesh, I tutored adults and children in English, as well as other subjects. I taught for three years in Bangladesh at International Turkish Hope School.
My teaching style is to make sure that those I am helping understand what is being talked about. If they do not, we will keep working at it until clear. I have always tried to apply a hands on approach when instructing others. It has almost always worked, and when it has not worked I tried to find the learning style of the individual and adapt to his or her needs. When correcting papers or reports I have always found that discussing what needs improvement with that person helps with them understanding the issue so that they will learn from the mistake.

I earned a teaching degree in Secondary Education in the social studies subject area, after studying at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. I have worked for ten years in education, with students as young as infants up to high school seniors, and all in between. For the past six years I have worked with ELL (english as a second language) students on the Navajo reservation and on the Mexican border at Nogales, Arizona. A Little Bit About Me...

I became interested in tutoring and teaching as an undergraduate. I began as a basic chemistry tutor, but quickly worked my way up to a lead tutor position. I then took on the responsibility of being a T.A. in both the chemistry lecture class as well as lab. After graduating college, my career led me on a path of training teachers, developing curriculum for schools and teachers, and finally into the position I am now, as a K-5 Technology Instructor.
