I believe that every student has the ability to learn. Teachers must take the time to discover the individual needs of students in order to help all students be successful. I strive to provide individualized instruction in all areas and for all children. I firmly believe in involving a child's parents in all aspects of their education. Parents are a child's first teachers!
I have been teaching students with special needs for the past 14 years. I have experience with preschool through 6th grade. I also worked at Sylvan Learning Center, where I worked with students through 12th grade. I especially enjoy working with students with Learning Disabilities, lower cognitive abilities, and children on the Autism Spectrum. I am trained in a reading program for children with Dyslexia. I have been a Reading Buddy in the Hoover School System for the last 10 years and am currently working with students in the Latino After-School Program at Rocky Ridge Elementary. While volunteering, I worked with struggling readers, English Language Learners, and students is Special Ed with ADD/ADHD. I'm currently working toward my Masters in Teaching - English as a Second Language and enjoy working with ELLs. Last summer, I worked for ETS, Educational Testing Services, as an item writer for TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication )in Princeton, NJ. It was challenging work and gave me a different perspective of the English language. My strengths are in language arts, reading, writing, decoding, etc...
