I like to understand where the students are coming from, and see if I can make the topic more understandable. My thought is to make the student understand the topic, not just get by.
I have been teaching for six years at the Southwest Colorado Community College. I have taught basic mathematics to algebra III. I believe it is best to offer guidance, and allow the student to go through the process of discovery. Things learned independently are much more prized and valuable. Of course, one cannot let them flounder too long so that discouragement sets in. And it is best to find out what they like, and to work with that as much as possible.
While in New York, I worked for two years as a teacher of Science at a Junior High school in the Bronx. There I was awarded "Rookie-Teacher-of-the-Year." I enjoy working one on one with a wide variety of students - those with solid backgrounds in mathematics, as well as those who have had difficulties with mathematics their entire lives. In fact, I believe that one of the biggest reasons a child/teen/adult needs tutoring in mathematical sciences often stems from something missing in their early years of learning math.
