My interests and abilities in mathematics, physics, soccer, cycling, and triathlon is a result of developing in a gender-free environment. My upper-level college mathematics courses were my first experience with just how much women were underrepresented in the sciences. I was genuinely intimidated and surprised by the lack of females in my classes. During those years, I questioned my ability more often than not. Although I did not earn straight A’s, I did learn that I am equally as able to succeed in mathematics as the males that continue to surround me. The teaching style I have is really a mix of all styles. I was exposed to teaching classes as an undergraduate student. One class really taught me the importance of building a teaching style with all of the learning styles involved. Whether it is visual, kinesthetic, audio, or reading, a good teacher will take the time to incorporate all of these into their style. I think this is so important especially when working with children because a child is at a very impressionable age with great imagination.
