My comments on tutoring Calculus II : I taught Calculus II for DeVry University for over fifteen years.

I have taught both high school and college level courses. I have also had a job in which I helped create a data base of the K-12 Objectives in Mathematics for forty-nine states. I also have worked as a quality assurance reviewer for the development of Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus curriculum for online high school courses. I have tutoring for the Arizona AIMS tests and currently am tutoring an 16 hour review of the mathematics portion of the GED exam.
I am able to break a complex problem into small, discrete steps which the students seem to appreciate. An approach I use in my teaching is the I rarely will tell the student outright what to do to get the answer or just what the answer is. I believe that most children (and young adults), being inquisitive in nature, need to know “why”, not just “what”, “who”, or whatever else is important to learn. “Why” makes things make sense, and allows connections to be made to related concepts. I find that teaching works best if you tailor the material to your audience - i.e. you don't want to lose them OR bore them. Use what they know as a foundation to build on to teach new concepts. If material is difficult or unfamiliar to your class it's important to be prepared in advance with several approaches to get the material across. Review material periodically to reinforce confidence in the students and always make sure they have a firm grasp on material before moving on.
