When I was in high school I had a lot of anxiety about math. I went back to college late in life and I was terrified that I would have to take a few math courses to graduate. It wasn't long before math was my favorite class and I changed my major. When I was in school I helped a lot of my classmates with calculus. Since my sophomore year of high school, I have been helping my peers in subjects related to science and math. I helped the biology teachers create quizzes, grade papers, and provide after-school academic assistance to students. During my first semester of college, I participated in the Triunfo/Triumph Tutoring Program through El Centro Student Services at Colorado State University. This program targets K-5 grade students in the Poudre School District who need mentors to guide them with their studies. Teaching children takes patience and creativity. Each child is different in their attention span and interests. Making each subject important and interesting is one place to start. It is crucial to never let a child give up, and not to give up on them yourself. My goal in teaching is to determine which way the child learns, for example a visual learning may need to draw out spelling words, where an audible learner needs to recite them. I love to find new ways to relate what they are learning with life outside of school and in this way show them how important the subject is. I believe the most effective way to learn is through self discovery of the concepts. This should be done in a very positive environment in which the student is encouraged and motivated to fully understand the material. I don't believe in memorization, but understanding.
