In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. Everybody thinks differently, so the key is to discuss and explore the topic with a student until you see that they've experienced that "aha" moment. After spending 20 years in school, I have learned how to study for just about anything. My undergraduate experience was weighted equally between the science classes necessary for entry into veterinary school, and my passion for the written word, which I pursued through the Oregon State University Honor's college. Since earning my degree in Math in 1984, I have worked in the Software development field. The last 15 years I have been an independent consultant. I have 2 college age children and 2 elementary age twins. My college age children have both taken math through calculus so I have had many opportunities to tutor them over the years in advanced math.
