I received my Bachelors of Arts degree from Willamette University, where I majored in politics and minored in economics. I chose to work for a Bachelor's of Arts degree because it stresses a strong understanding of all subjects - this is the core of my approach to learning and education. During my senior year of high school I tutored math and science at a middle school for one year, and prior to this spent several years babysitting and assisting elementary school-aged children with their studies. A Little Bit About Me...

Having graduated from a liberal arts university, I know that being well-rounded is very important in life. I graduated from Whitworth with a BS in Math and minors in Spanish and Computer Science, so I know what it is like to learn complex subjects. I have tutored my peers along with students younger and older than myself, as a mathematician and a Spanish speaker. I led a Spanish Live Lab for two years and informally tutored math for four. Also, I have a great deal of grammatical knowledge from writing research papers in math and computer science and Spanish.

I have always loved to teach and have been told by my children that I should have been a teacher. When it comes to math I have found that most people who have trouble with math have simply missed some fundamental along the way. It is extremely rewarding to figure out what that is and fill in that hole. I teach by breaking problems down and asking easier questions that lead to the answer. I am good at finding many ways to approach the same problem while I search for the way that clicks with the student. One of my children has ADD so I have learned to recognize when that focus switch turns off and have found ways to bring the focus back. Next, my goal is to make clear the basic concept of the theory or formula that needs to be applied to the problem. This is probably the most crucial step in that it is very important to make a connection between reality and being able to measure or quantify the problem and that it makes sense.
