A Little Bit About Me...

I recently graduated from Bard College, a selective liberal arts school in New York. I have taken classes in a variety of subjects including biology, french, history, and writing. I recently completed a 90 page thesis. I have excellent critical thinking and writing skills, which have served me well as a student. As a tutor, I strive to engage my students in thinking complexly about the topic at hand. I have experience tutoring middle school aged children in music, math, and writing. I also have experience working with preschool aged children.
I believe that learning through hands-on experience is the best way to fully comprehend material. I want to interest students in academics. To accomplish this, a teacher must show how math, or reading is useful; how anything can be exciting. I want to make learning fun. And I use a variety of tactics to accomplish this.

A Little Bit About Me...

The guitar has always been my biggest passion, and I have made it my goal to learn as much about it as possible. This search has led me to study classical guitar and music theory formally at the University of Delaware for three years before leaving to study recording in a professional technical environment at the Omega Studios' School. Previously to college, I performed with an original rock group called Society Ills, where I gained experience writing, arranging, recording, and producing our music. While in college, I spent my time home from school substitute teaching through Frederick County Public Schools. After graduation from American University, I continued to substitute and in the fall of 2005 I took a part-time position at a middle school, teaching Theatre Arts and Music Performance Lab. While teaching, I began my teaching certification through the Maryland State Department of Education, where I completed a course called Inclusion: Making it Happen. I also taught dance at Dance Unlimited and Elite Feet Dance studios in addition to working at numerous children's theatre camps throughout Maryland and West Virginia.

A Little Bit About Me...

Through personal and professional experience, I have come to believe that fluency is most quickly achieved through immersion in a language (and instruction in only that language). However, accuracy can be developed and maintained more consistently when a student is able to compare his or her native tongue to the one which he or she is studying - as long as the student has a good understanding of the grammar and other basics of the native language. As a result, I believe in that constant exposure to a language, coupled with conceptual comparison to the native tongue, will foster the best combination of fluency and accuracy.
