Enthusatic elementary teacher with a passion for teaching!

I taught for two years in third grade and two years in second grade in North Carolina. I am currently awaiting my Virginia elementary education license. I prepared third grade students for the End of Grade state standardized test, in which my classes did very well. As a teacher in North Carolina, I communicated frequently with parents, worked daily with co-workers to review student data for the purpose of remediation, and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of my diverse students. I helped to prepare students for the demands of a 21st century economy through daily use of technology, collaborative learning groups and hands-on, inquiry based instruction. Character building skills were incorporated in all academic areas. As an elementary school teacher, I prepared students to be independent, life-long learners.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Grammar : I am an expert at grammar, as both of my grandfathers were college professors. (My paternal grandfather taught at Harvard.) I have funny examples to make the boring subject of grammar fun. From a vague antecedent to a comma splice, I can point out examples of bad grammar in your speaking or writing, or make up examples, and explain what the mistakes are called and what the correct grammatical form is. Your first hour of tutoring is free (even if you don't continue) so you can see how much tutoring is really going to help you. So, let's get started soon!

If you watch me closely during our sessions, you can see me secretly paying keen attention to you and how you learn best. For example, you might say, "It LOOKS like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! LOOKS. Maybe you're a visual learner and like to SEE things explained and SEE examples. (About 80% of students are visual learners.) On the other hand, you might say, "It sounds like they want me to factor here." And I'll think, "Aha! sounds. Maybe you like to HEAR things explained, and you're a keen listener and like to hear things described clearly and specifically. I have my degree in Elementary Education. I have had experience teaching large class sizes, but I have also spent a lot of time in small group reading instruction, and I have worked in small group math. I tutored a kindergarten girl to improve her phonemic awareness. I tutored Language Arts in elementary school after school hours. I worked at a day care for 5 years and helped students with their homework after school.
I believe in meeting students at their level of need, and mastering the skills needed in order to move onto higher level skills. I believe in teaching students how to develop their critical thinking skills, and teaching them the concepts needed to succeed in school and life.
