My comments on tutoring Chess : I know the basic moves and strategies.

My style is student centered. I always try to provide a positive atmosphere for learning. My jokes were a technique to help accomplish that goal. As a GED teacher I always began with a pretest and documented student progress to correct any deficiencies. I believe in positive reinforcement and helping students achieve their goals which gives us both a sense of accomplishment.
I am an honors graduate of U.S.F. with forty years of teaching experience. In addition to my B.A. and M.A. degrees, I completed all cousework for the ED.D. I have taught FCAT preperation in middle school in math and reading. I have also taught GED Prep in the evenings. I taught junior high math one year. I have also written two books. One is a history jokebook. The other is a memoir of humorous classroom incidents. I believe that these experiences qualify me to tutor social studies, reading, and math.

"Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.
Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.

A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer inductive teaching rather than imposing lectures. An interactive style enables students to feel they are a part of the process and it personalizes the activities so that a feeling of success is ever present to solidify the foundations upon which to build a substantial knowledge base. I take the students from where they are to where they could be and urge them with positive feedback to reach goals they might have felt were otherwise unattainable. I treat them with respect which is returned without reservation.
Having been a secondary school educator for so many years, I have observed the changes in trends in teaching as well as in learning. I have adapted my personal views to change with the trends so that I could incorporate novel techniques and personal creativity to enable all students to achieve at least to the height of their abilities. More About This Tutor...

The world of today is marked by an over abundance of information. An internet search on any subject yields thousands of results, often with conflicting ideas. Critical thinking is now more important than ever. I take this point of view into tutoring sessions in that I challenge the student to understand the process, as opposed to just memorizing the steps. Through strengthening general thought processes and decision making skills, the student benefits in all subjects while learning a particular item. I work hard to keep the session fun and the gaining of knowledge a pleasure. Having traveled through nearly fifty countries, I can also offer a uniquely international perspective. Most importantly, I understand that the benefit of tutoring is the highly specialized attention the child can receive. Thus, I make assessing, and adapting to, the specific needs of each child a top priority.

A Little Bit About Me...

I was taught by my mentor to allow the tutee to teach themselves. Instead of making corrections for them, it was our writing center's policy to insist that each student held their own pen and made their own corrections. We would engage in discussion and challenge them to spot their own mistakes, acting as an invisible hand guiding them towards the knowledge that would serve them throughout their academic career instead of us becoming a quick fix for the present tense. Nothing is better than the look of recognition on a tutee's face when the light bulb goes off and you know that they simply "got it."
While I was employed as a writing tutor in college, I was also taking additional courses to improve my skill set as a tutor. We focused on interpersonal communication and reaching out to students regardless of any baggage brought into the tutoring session. I worked as an undergraduate t ... read more

I have taught private lessons to young students throughout my college career. Being a musician, a lot of our instruction is done on a one-to-one basis. During these years I developed an ability to make lessons not only educational but also fun. I believe education is most successful when it is presented in an interesting format. Aside from my experience in the music field, I have studied most other academic fields as a college student, including algebra, precalculus, biology, English composition, anthropology, earth science, social studies and humanities. I am also a writer and an avid reader.
As a graduate student in New York City, I learned a unique way to teach children. This method involves presenting material in a clear and concise fashion, and then asking the student questions as the lesson continues. This method of continual questioning keeps the student alert and reveals w ... read more

As an Honors Program graduate, my BA in English literature has motivated me to develop strong reading and writing skills. While writing research essays and my Honors thesis, I developed a critical understanding of grammar, sentence structure, as well as how to develop a strong, provocative thesis and support it with evidence. For the past several years, I have helped my fellow students study various subjects, particularly English and Math, and for nearly a year I have been a writing tutor for the University of South Florida.
Good English instructors should persist in cultivating knowledge in the disciplines of reading and writing, as well as teaching. They should also develop insights into the obstacles faced by a wide range of students and be able to provide specially formulated guidance necessary to motivate them. A Little Bit About Me...

As a graduate of Indiana University, I was driven to academic success as a Dean's List student in attaining a degree in Business Management. During my time at Indiana I tutored students in English, Social Studies, Math, and History. The students ranged from elementary to college level and my retention for these students from year to year was nearly 100%. Now that I am here in Florida I want to continue to tutor, mentor, and foster educational improvement.
I love helping students succeed. I believe all students are capable of academic success. However, I have come to learn that learning styles differ greatly and to be an effective tutor it is imperative to analyze the student and find the most effective tutoring style that suits his or her learning style. My goal is to improve results through patience, hard-work, and confidence building. I believe a good educator can make a world of ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a diverse background because I believe diversity of experience enriches life tremendously. I have degrees in business and engineering. I have also sought out writing assignments in past jobs, giving me insight into grammar and composition. My past tutoring experience is primarily in computer software and reading/writing, though I have a strong command of basic math subjects such as algebra.
I enjoy working with those who have a desire to learn. I understand that education is not only an end in itself, but a means to accomplish life goals. My objective as a tutor is to help students meet their goals and to gain the knowledge they seek. I am very patient. Few things are more satisfying than helping a student gain pride in their accomplishments.
