"Half of knowledge is knowing where to find it."

After completing my undergraduate degree in English Literature at Florida State University, I worked as a substitute teacher in Hillsborough County for two years. In 2009, I completed my Master's Degree in Communication at University of South Florida while simultaneously employed at the Department of Special Education. I have been tutoring with Advanced Learners for 1 year and am currently an Adjunct Instructor of Public Speaking at HCC Dale Mabry.
Once while subbing, I entered a classroom where the students had been allowed to watch Jerry Springer on TV for the last two weeks. I couldn't let this continue, but I saw how emotional the class was about the show. I encouraged them to write their own talk show and told them we would perform it the next day. I find that connecting student's interest with the subject matter to be learned is the best way to teach.

My comments on tutoring Chess : I know the basic moves and strategies.

My style is student centered. I always try to provide a positive atmosphere for learning. My jokes were a technique to help accomplish that goal. As a GED teacher I always began with a pretest and documented student progress to correct any deficiencies. I believe in positive reinforcement and helping students achieve their goals which gives us both a sense of accomplishment.
I am an honors graduate of U.S.F. with forty years of teaching experience. In addition to my B.A. and M.A. degrees, I completed all cousework for the ED.D. I have taught FCAT preperation in middle school in math and reading. I have also taught GED Prep in the evenings. I taught junior high math one year. I have also written two books. One is a history jokebook. The other is a memoir of humorous classroom incidents. I believe that these experiences qualify me to tutor social studies, reading, and math.

I have my Florida state teachers certification a strong letters of recommendation from my previous principals and have years of experience teaching k-12 students. A few of my career high lights are as follows, I have taught both disadvantaged children in Brooklyn, NY and gifted and talented highschool students in MD, as well as substitute teaching in all subjects for the Teachers 2000 Program. I am currently working toward my master’s degree in art education from The George Washington University.
I have taught to all ages in many different settings and subjects. I find one on one tutoring to be the most rewarding and effective. I would not only teach students to create a positive learning environment but work to build study and learning habits to nurture their knowledge and critical thinking skills in a developmentally appropriate manner for each age group and skill level.

As a professional athlete, I know what kind of work ethic it takes to excel in athletics as well as education. I had a double major and minor in college and earned my degree with a 3.5 GPA while playing baseball full-time. I have always excelled in mathematics and Spanish and feel more than competent teaching other areas as well. Through my two years of teaching students ranging from 3rd grade through community college, every single student improved their grades, a fact that gives me much pride and satisfaction.
I enjoyed teaching all age groups, but I feel that there is one continuing thread that I try to keep in all my tutoring sessions. The teachers from my past that made the greatest impact on me pushed me to be a better student that I thought I was capable of, and I try to use this tact when I teach. I also try to keep it as low-stress as possible, since most students are ... read more

The world of today is marked by an over abundance of information. An internet search on any subject yields thousands of results, often with conflicting ideas. Critical thinking is now more important than ever. I take this point of view into tutoring sessions in that I challenge the student to understand the process, as opposed to just memorizing the steps. Through strengthening general thought processes and decision making skills, the student benefits in all subjects while learning a particular item. I work hard to keep the session fun and the gaining of knowledge a pleasure. Having traveled through nearly fifty countries, I can also offer a uniquely international perspective. Most importantly, I understand that the benefit of tutoring is the highly specialized attention the child can receive. Thus, I make assessing, and adapting to, the specific needs of each child a top priority.

Good English instructors should persist in cultivating knowledge in the disciplines of reading and writing, as well as teaching. They should also develop insights into the obstacles faced by a wide range of students and be able to provide specially formulated guidance necessary to motivate them. As a tutor, more than just teaching students how to pass their assigned material, my goal is to encourage students to realize their full potential as scholars and proactive citizens.
As an Honors Program graduate, my BA in English literature has motivated me to develop strong reading and writing skills. While writing research essays and my Honors thesis, I developed a critical understanding of grammar, sentence structure, as well as how to develop a strong, provocative thesis and support it with evidence. For the past several years, I have helped my fellow students study various subjects, ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I was taught by my mentor to allow the tutee to teach themselves. Instead of making corrections for them, it was our writing center's policy to insist that each student held their own pen and made their own corrections. We would engage in discussion and challenge them to spot their own mistakes, acting as an invisible hand guiding them towards the knowledge that would serve them throughout their academic career instead of us becoming a quick fix for the present tense. Nothing is better than the look of recognition on a tutee's face when the light bulb goes off and you know that they simply "got it."
While I was employed as a writing tutor in college, I was also taking additional courses to improve my skill set as a tutor. We focused on interpersonal communication and reaching out to students regardless of any baggage brought into the tutoring session. I worked as an undergraduate t ... read more

Having been a secondary school educator for so many years, I have observed the changes in trends in teaching as well as in learning. I have adapted my personal views to change with the trends so that I could incorporate novel techniques and personal creativity to enable all students to achieve at least to the height of their abilities. I have learned in corporate computer technogy to maximize efforts to reinforce students' efforts to use available resources to help them learn better and faster at all levels.
I prefer inductive teaching rather than imposing lectures. An interactive style enables students to feel they are a part of the process and it personalizes the activities so that a feeling of success is ever present to solidify the foundations upon which to build a substantial knowledge base. I take the students from where they are to where they could be and urge them with posi ... read more
