I Help Students Tackle Math With Confidence!

I have enjoyed the personal gratification of tutoring since high school. Since I was 15 years old, I have shared my knowledge and love of mathematics with people of all ages. I attended Spelman College and Georgia Institute of Technology, where I received my Bachelor of Science in both Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. I also tutored my peers at these institutions. My goal is to help students understand the foundation and theory behind math concepts, so that they can tackle any math problem with ease and confidence. Confidence is key!

As a college graduate and a teacher, I have aspired to help students from K through college to achieve their goals and to be the best they can be. I beieve that learning comes about through constant questioning. The student needs to review where they are now and then be led through the new material by small steps. The student then needs to step back and review the connections between these steps. When the student begins to see the logic of mathematics the easier it is to retain the material. My teaching style is participatory. I like to ask questions of the student and have them verbalize what they know. This gives me the opportunity to identify possible gaps in their knowledge and to fill in those gaps. I also try to relate covered material to historical events. For instance, when talking about the importance of analytical chemistry, I like to talk about the Marsh test which was developed in the 1830’s as a definitive reaction for arsenic poisoning. In like manner, I like to relate covered material to the personal experiences of the student.
