Give my profile a read, maybe I have what you need!

Have mentored students in a relaxed manner as well as in a strict scheduled manner, can do both. For Math/Sciences I generally use example problems to help learn a core concept then use an application style problem to help the student solidify their understanding, rather than just memorize the process. Strong skills editing a students writing, both creative and technical. I enjoy coding and CAD and have developed a few methods that the student can use to help them debug issues. If we somehow come across something unknown to me, I have a library of reference material and will find the correct answer promptly (and on my own time, not on your dime)

My comments on tutoring Algebra : Algebra I is the basis for all higher math. This is where the concepts begin to get really abstract and it is very important to be able to find ways to visualize what is happening. If one can create a picture of what is happening in one’s mind, one can then remember the concepts and apply them to the situations which will be used in geometry and onwards. One of the ways I help students with this is by having them use what I call a ‘trivial example’, which is an example of the rule which is so easy that I can’t get it wrong! This can help a student check the correct method even in a high-stress exam. There has to be a better way of learning than trying to remember lists of formulas… and I can almost always find it. One of my high school students used to be really scared of math… and he earned an F. This year, he is passing, and he just asked me for some extra problems so that he could practice a concept to be sure he had it clear for his next test. I don’t have to remind him of material from earlier in the year anymore, because he remembers it himself. I firmly believe that every individual can, with the right help and explanation, become expert in math. I am an Arizona certified elementary and high school teacher with over 15 years experience teaching all levels of math.

I have taught Special Education for over 20 years in a wide variety of settings. I have tutored about 100 students in a wide variety of subjects, using my deep knowledge and understanding of how we humans learn and retain information and skills. I am friendly and approachable, quickly establishing a positive rapport with my students that enables me to demand excellence with a willing response.
I pinpoint the specific skills that are challenging for my student and then use innovative and engaging methods to help them master those skills. I always aim to leave my students comfortable and confident in the subjects I teach them.

Fun, caring, and supportive teacher looking to tutor

I am very hands on in the areas of math and science. I enjoy teaching children to think outside the box when learning. I teach students to use colors, pictures, mnemonic devices to help remember important steps, people, dates, etc.
I have been tutoring since I was in high school and have continued tutoring elementary students in the areas of math, reading, vocabulary, social studies, and science into my adulthood. I have a bachelors degree in Education from Arizona State University. I have worked in the school environment for the last year as a teaching assistant in a high risk special education classroom. I am currently earning my teaching certificate so that I can teach in the next year.

I have been a tutor at Phoenix college for one semester. I tutored all math and physics courses. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to help others, but it has also strengthened because I allowed me to remember few simple things that I have seen in the past and have forgotten. My comments on tutoring Algebra : Been a while since I remembered it. Will need to brush up myself.

My experience in Tutoring is a bit fleeting only having done it in odds and ends; non-professionally at best, but as I see progress in others, it inspires ME to grow. Also knowing that I have helped in some small part further encourages me to help out more. I don't have any track record to speak of but I what I hope to provide for those under my wing is a chance to believe, as motivator Les Brown would say, "It's Possible that I can succeed!" THAT'S what students REALLY need to know.
One on One is the ideal method for me as it allows time dedicated to the tutored. It makes them feel special and appreciated and also allows time for coaching and motivation.

Although instructors/tutors have a preferred teaching style, I will often mix in some elements of other styles. If I wish to take a more open approach to my teaching, I include a blend of various styles which is very effective. Teacher-centered, where the teacher is expert and authority in presenting information works well with students who need little direction from the instructor, and/or those who accept responsibility for their own learning. While in other situations, I will take a learner-centered approach thus viewing my role as more of a facilitator of student learning.
In 1999-2000, I provided highly individualized, one-on-one instruction in the client's homes while working with a local tutoring company. I am an experienced educator and state certified instructor with impeccable credentials and a heartfelt enthusiasm for teaching. More recently, I have tutored adults partici ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I am a recent graduate of Arizona State University. Having used tutors myself I know of the great help that they can be to one who is struggling with a certain subject. Having experience with tutors and in tutoring others in mathematics has been a great help and a great source of joy in my life. Using my knowledge and passion for a subject and the ability to use the materials that a student is currently using to teach them is a source of pride for me. I enjoy being able to review a topic to see how it has been presented and then taking ques from the student to find how they best the material and then help them find a way to make it work for them.
I believe that there is not one way to teach everybody. Everyone learns in a different way and at different speeds. I like to help a person understand a topic in the best way for them, not just learn how to use a formula to crank out a num ... read more
