The thing I love most about teaching is opening up someones eyes to something new and seeing the "wow" look on their faces. Sometimes certain subject matter is not always easy for a person to learn. I've always appreciated the teacher that went out of their way with a great amount of patience to make sure I understood. Teaching is a rewarding and humbling experience. One of the most beneficial things for me as an artist is the time I spend researching books for my students. I find that the interacting with art books and magazines is far more engaging for the students than slides. Using a variety of critiquing methods seems to keep the level of energy and interest high. I enjoy using a “silent” critique, where students write each other candid and anonymous messages. I try to give projects that encourage personal investigation.
