Dyslexia is one of my top subjects! I have a Masters degree in Reading as well as a K through 12 Reading Endorsement. My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Reading and spelling is taught using the Orton-Gillingham approach. This method is perfect for students with Learning Disabilities, dyslexia, ADHD/ADD, and language processing problems. I use materials from the Wilson Reading System for their ease and low cost to parents. In 2007 I had the wonderful opportunity of being one of two teachers at the Ann Arbor Academy's lower school for students with learning disabilities. I have worked as a Teacher's Assistant for three years where I did extensive tutoring with one student over the course of the year. I substitute taught for two years where I learned a great deal about schools, particularly elementary schools and their various curriculum and expectations for grade levels. I would say that it is a little more toward laid back. Being over 6" tall, stocky, pushing hard, being an ogre, hard-nosed, that isn't going to work for me. People have a tendency to be a bit intimidated and fearful because of my size. I will use it to my advantage if it is necessary, or becomes necessary, but I've found being a little more quiet, reserved and coaxing the student to initiate the discussion is a little better. Ask leading questions, adjust and proceed, based on their response.
