I have tutored students in reading programs from first grade to the High School Equivalency program. I also have a B.S. in broadcast journalism and currently am a literacy teacher in the fifth grade at LaFollette Elementary School in Campbell County. I currently tutor a fifth grade student and a first grade student after school but have plenty of time to add to my schedule. I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. I have 30 years experience in Elementary Education. I have taught grades 2-8 in a self-contained and block scheduled school. I served as Asst. Principal for 2 years and then moved to a district coordinator's job emphasizing curriculum. I have designed standardized tests for my district using Tennessee's new curriculum standards. I tutored students after school hours for many years with an emphasis on Language Arts and Elementary Math. I believe all students have the ability to learn. It is my job as the teacher to find out what makes a student "click". I have learned through my experiences that connecting subject matter to a student's interests will ensure the student learns.
