Hello, My name is Hazel Sherin and I am currently a Freshman at The New School. As a high school student I decided instead of taking a foreign language to take sign language as an alternative. Prior to taking ASL 1, I was completely unaware of Deaf Culture and The Deaf community. In learning some of the history and attending Deaf events, I rapidly fell in love with the language. Unfortunately, I only reached ASL 3, as I only started taking it as a Sophomore. Since then I have taken one ASL 2 course in college just as a review because that is all that is offered at my school. Sign Language is one of my top subjects! I am a certified (NIC) American Sign Language interpreter. I have been actively involved and working within the Deaf community for about 10 years.

For the past seven years I have worked full time as a job coach at Lexington Center for the Deaf Vocational Services Center in Jackson Heights, NY. I also volunteered in their Independent Living Center for two years prior to my employment with them. In 2010 I was a private tutor for a neighborhood adolescent, teaching him basic sign language to better help him communicate with his family, as he is unable to use his voice. I have also spent time volunteering at the Helen Keller National Center for DeafBlind Individuals, where I received training to become a certified Supported Service Provider (SSP). I'm Mason, I was born as completely deaf but I got an cochlear implants when I was 4. I learned English first then sign language as my second language.
