As a mechanical engineer I have been doing applied calculus and physics since I started school. As an undergraduate I was a peer mentor to the freshman engineers. We taught the students to juggle both figuratively and literally. It was especially rewarding because I had been in their situation only a few years before. On my breaks from school I often tutored my best friends little brother in Algebra. I can honestly say that I taught him a semester worth of algebra (twice) in only a few days. I enjoy having the freedom to create innovative and interesting ways of presenting material. I believe the student I am working with is the most important part of teaching any subject; I can teach them how to solve a problem, but this information is 'lost to the wind' if it's not sinking in with them. I use skills of observation to judge what is being retained, and what is being lost. There is no harm in repetition, either on a particular problem, or on a whole concept. I like being flexible, and am happy to adjust to each individual's learning style. One of the best ways I've found to reinforce the knowledge is to work out an example problem as they watch, and then ask *them* to solve a similar problem while I offer suggestions.

I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.
My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.

One method may work for Student A but not Student B, so I aspire to teach methods that will reach both students. I strongly believe in learning by doing. I have never given a lecture or taught something 1on1 without providing practice problems or peppering students with questions. The hardest part about this is getting students to understand that it is okay to ask and answer questions. Most students I have encountered are used to simply looking at the teacher but never really interacting with them. If I ask a question and nobody gets it, I rephrase it, reteach the section that led up to the question and generally try to understand why the question is not being answered. Aside from some initial amount of memorization, students need to learn how to think through concepts and ideas, and the best way to do that, regardless of subject, is ask them things.
