Math, Science, Writing, and Critical Thinking

My favorite part about teaching is the moment of sudden understanding that you can see in a student's eyes when they've got it. The challenge, of course, is getting to that moment, especially in a subject like math or science. While certain subjects may come easier to some people than to others, I do not believe that anyone is "incapable" of understanding and excelling in any field of study. If understanding is lacking, that is only because the student needs to be presented the material in a way that makes sense to them.

As a mechanical engineer I have been doing applied calculus and physics since I started school. As an undergraduate I was a peer mentor to the freshman engineers. We taught the students to juggle both figuratively and literally. It was especially rewarding because I had been in their situation only a few years before. On my breaks from school I often tutored my best friends little brother in Algebra. I can honestly say that I taught him a semester worth of algebra (twice) in only a few days. I also mentored undergraduates while working for the NSF funded Center for High-Rate Nanomanufacturing. I helped them research specific projects during their time (over the summer) working with us.

I enjoy having the freedom to create innovative and interesting ways of presenting material. I believe the student I am working with is the most important part of teaching any subject; I can teach them how to solve a problem, but this information is 'lost to the wind' if it's not sinking in with them. I use skills of observation to judge what is being retained, and what is being lost. There is no harm in repetition, either on a particular problem, or on a whole concept. I like being flexible, and am happy to adjust to each individual's learning style. One of the best ways I've found to reinforce the knowledge is to work out an example problem as they watch, and then ask *them* to solve a similar problem while I offer suggestions.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.
I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.

I tutored middle school students 12 hours per week for two years at Ramstein Middle School, Ramstein Air Base, Germany.
I believe that each student is different, and that the best teaching method differs with each student. Some students respond better to being challenged while others will require smaller steps. As a rising junior at Cornell University, I was asked to TA a Chemistry course for engineers. I accepted and entered into my first teaching position. Immediately, I knew teaching was right for me. Helping explain a complicated topic in a simple way and watch students get it is an amazing experience. I quickly signed up to TA 3 more courses next semester (Bio,Chem,CS).
