I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.
My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.

I love teaching kids. Kids absorb new things like a sponge and often need things taught in a variety of ways in order to fully comprehend a subject. Regarding math, I use real-world examples to show how a particular concept is important. Then, I show the method to solve the problem. Next, I have the student teach me how to solve the problem. I start looking right away for “What is missing?” I have seen many students who are perfectly capable but struggle because they missed a fundamental building block. Learning is always difficult.
