While enrolled in the teacher certification program with Hendrix College, I mentored/tutored an eighth grader in various subjects. I enjoyed the one-on-one experience thoroughly and quickly returned to tutoring at Arkansas School for the Blind. During my three years of employment with ASB, I improved ACTAAP reading scores of two students with reading/learning impairments after one year of tutoring sessions from Below Basic to Basic. I believe and use a little theatrics, encouragement, and patience. With these, my students can be reached. These were traits my advisor looked for us to develop in our early starts as teachers. First and foremost, I understand that no two children learn the same. I believe many children struggle in a learning environment simply because they are not comfortable with it. I excel at personal communication, and make it my first goal to find out how the student is going to learn the best. Whether it requires dancing, music, pictures, whatever it takes, once a student is comfortable they are far more likely to absorb information. This holds true for any age.
