My comments on tutoring Science : PhD in Chemistry.

My education, work and volunteer experience, I believe, make me a qualified, reliable educator. I have a PhD in chemistry and an additional five years research and teaching experience within Universities in Upstate NY. In addition, over the past thirteen years of my career, I have taught groups, and tutored individually, a variety of different levels of science and chemistry education, ranging from high school science to the highest degree level chemistry, masters degree and PhD students. My drive for science education stems from my enthusiasm for science. I love challenging many students’ expectations that science is a difficult and “boring” subject by coming up with new ideas to help make it accessible, relevant and exciting. I also strongly believe in nurturing curiosity and helping children, to learn from engaging in independent thinking. My philosophy of learning is a trans ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In 2006 I was at my final step of reaching my BA in Secondary Education with an emphasis in English with only having left to complete my student teaching, but was taken by another opportunity. I moved to Japan and teach ESL and ESOL for almost 3 complete years. I taught from all ages two to adults, and learned many new skills, instruction and classroom management techniques, a new language and different ways to engage students in lessons. Most of my teaching and tutoring has been in the field of English from basic grammer skills to Chaucer. I have currently passed and am awaiting my NYS certificate as a teaching assistant and currently work in local schools as a substitute teacher. In August I will be going back to school to complete my BA.

I attended several schools to achieve my undergraduate degrees, both of which I worked hard to excel at the University level. Attending graduate school at Binghamton University truly prepared me for academia, requiring many research papers and essays as well as honing my knowledge in psychology, the arts, human development, english, and biology. I have tutored, un-officially, all during my college years, forming study groups to better help my peers, as well as having volunteer positions tutoring in math and english.
I love to teach and see the ideas light up the eyes of the person who suddenly got a concept. I think teaching should be adaptable and should fit the learning style of the student. Visual tasks, memory games, and hands-on-learning are, in my opinion, the best way to help someone truly learn (versus rote memory). I think that with the right guidance and put in the r ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I love to help children and adults learn and understand course material. I believe teaching is a form of behavioral modification and also adhere to the rule, "if the student has not learned, than the teacher has not taught". Every child has a unique learning style and it becomes the teacher's responsibility to adapt to each child's learning needs. Basically my teaching style changes for each person I interact with. The tools I use in tutoring include the following: visual aids, analogies, improving literacy (vocabulary), projects, presentations, etc.
During my years as an undergraduate student I tutored many of my fellow classmates in biological sciences including but not limited to the following subject areas: genetics, molecular biology, general biology, human anatomy and physiology and writing intensive requirements. A Little Bit About Me...

I've always highly valued education. As a former teacher, my quest to achieve high levels of excellence in education continued. For the past nine years, I've taught several levels of science courses. I have a Master of Science in Education and I am certified to teach Biology, Chemistry and general science. With this experience, along with all the science and math courses taken to earn a BS in Biology prior to teaching, I have gained much understanding in many areas of math and science. Over the years, I've taught or tutored students in mathematics and sciences.
I love teaching and working with all age groups. I am patient and easy going. I believe all children can learn, but each does so differently. My goal is to find the best way for each individual. This often entails different approaches at times. I provide mainly a constructivist and sometimes "expert" (focus on fact ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe anyone can learn and their quality of knowledge improved by finding a level and rapport that works for each individually. I work patiently, with humor, and at a pace with students that helps them to feel not only comfortable but appreciated for their efforts. I consider a key ingredient to be to first find what base levels of knowledge the student has before plunging into the subject at hand. Once this base has been assessed, then it is much easier to explain the principles and methods required to solve most any problems. I try to combine the characteristics of those I have worked with and educators in my past, that I found to be the easiest to learn from, and as well to not feel patronized or talked down to.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a firm believer that teaching style should encompass diversity of instruction and assessment because the students themselves are very diverse. I will begin each lesson with an agenda and an intended learning goal. Instruction of the lesson will be delivered through a variety of media including text, videos, animations, etc. that would enhance the student’s learning. The student will then be given many opportunities to refine their understanding of the lesson through independent research during which I will provide insight and motivation wherever possible. Their assessment of the learning goal would range from a simple pen & paper test or quiz to an activity that allows to them to apply their attainment of the learning goal.

A Little Bit About Me...

Through my teaching experience thus far, I have found the method of facilitating rather than dictating to be a highly beneficial style of teaching. I have learned that if students construct their own learning experiences they will not only retain information longer, but they will also become more confident in their abilities. Being devoted to this assertion confims that I have made the right career choice for myself. I love working with young people, and will continue to strive to be a positive influence in their lives.
I have earned a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, as well as a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. I have over 15 years of teaching experience in all grade levels. I have spent the majority of my teaching career educating young adults in the areas of math, science, reading, social studies and writing.

I believe that one key to successfully helping children of all ages to learn, is a positive and encouraging atmosphere. Since every child learns differently, I always adapt my style of teaching a particular subject to best fit the needs of each individual. I have found that incorporating every day examples and scenarios into the concepts that a student is learning, can help them better understand the subject matter, and the application of these concepts. As an educator, I am flexible and rely on numerous resources to help demonstrate topics. I have a very approachable and patient demeanor, and a sincere passion for assisting each student I work with to understand what they are studying and allowing them realize what they are capable of.
