For Science and Math I employ an inquiry-based method of teaching/exploration. This allows for more meaningful learning and gives the student the opportunity to learn on his or her own before being given instruction by the teacher. This method is aligned with the STEM initiative in the United States. For Language Arts, reading, and Spanish, I teach by individualizing instruction to each child, allowing for meaning-making and communication rather than simply rote learning of facts and vocabulary. I believe in combining a more traditional, rote approach with the more progressive whole-language approach to create a well-rounded literacy curriculum.

Given the right atmosphere, I honestly believe anyone can learn. Unfortunately, many individuals are given labels, especially regarding their learning capacity, and once that belief system is in place, the expectations are often lowered and self-esteem suffers. I recently graduated from the University of Nevada Reno with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. Throughout my college career, I had many opportunities to teach elementary students, both in the classroom and in one-on-one situations. From 2003 to 2006 I worked in Texas as an after school tutor helping children with test preparation. At the University of Nevada Reno I taught lessons on science and mathematics to second-grade students twice every week.
