After graduating college, I served in the US Army for six years as a Chemical Defense Officer. My primary duty was to ensure that all 17,000 soldiers in the 1st Cavalry Division were trained and equipped to properly deal with chemical and biological hazards. I started out volunteering at my children's Mother's Day Out Program where I taught very young children and nurtured them to learn that it was OK for mom to leave because she always came back. We had circle time, learned the basics, how to share, give, receive, pray, hug and make friends. From there I graduated to a more formal training i.e. preschool, where I actually planned lessons and age appropriate curriculum. From there I progressed to substitute teaching elementary and secondary students. My teaching style is very simple, but is one that took a long time to learn. In college you are taught everything but HOW to teach. I learned the HOW by watching my teachers and having some very good mentors. I began to ask myself, " why do I learn more from this instructor than that instructor?" No matter what the subject is, you have to learn 2 things to reach the student. One, how does this student learn. Two, you can't force the information.
