Helping students learn and learn how to grow

I like students to be comfortable, enjoy their experiences with me as much as possible, and learn not only the material they need to study, but also habits and practices that will help them with future studies.
My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I've taught middle school and high school, as well as at Bellevue College, Renton technical College, and North Seattle Community College. My own experiences include not just teaching, but also professional broadcasting, journalism (both broadcast and print newswriting, creative writing, editing, and reporting), writing a book, supervising employees as well as students, and poetry awards.

If students lack motivation or direction, it’s often because they are trying to perform an advanced task without basic skills. For example, many students know about the “five-paragraph essay” format, but don’t know how to organize the individual sentences. The first part of my philosophy focuses on providing students with these basic skills, as doing so prepares and makes them eager to face their assignments. The second part of my philosophy involves research. When students don’t know something, I’ve found that they will be quick to give up without considering the resources available. By showing students how to teach themselves, I let them know that they do have the opportunity and ability to succeed if they put in the effort.

I spent most of my high school and college career honing my writing and reading ability, and through four years of English classes I have developed excellent writing skills. Additionally, my computer and internet knowledge has grown through my studies and professional work. I feel comfortable with all styles of writing, and enjoy discussing writing and reading with all age groups. I also enjoy studying chemistry and science, and I excelled at both in high school and in college. I love to see students grasp a new concept and revisit their work with greater pride and confidence as a result. Realizing we all learn in differing rates and manners, I find great satisfaction in teaching in several ways at the same time (e.g., varying visual and auditory cues, telling stories and providing mnemonic devices). Having worked with issues such as ADHD, dyslexia and dyscalculia, I recognize and address learning challenges with patience, courtesy, respect -- and optimism.
