Currently, I am studying for an Associates Degree in Biological Sciences, which required a retake of Intermediate Algebra, where I excelled as top student. My high school math was always at the "AA" or accellerated levels, having completed Trigonometry and pre-Calculus/Physics by my junior year. I believe that most subjects are not difficult to master. Most problems come from "under learning" the subject. Repetition may work for some subjects, but with math the student needs to understand WHY a process works. Once this is learned, the rest comes rather easily. When the student takes for granted a way to solve a problem, they are lost when the problem is presented in a different way. But, if the student understands the WHY, the presentation of the problem does not matter.
As a Cal Poly graduate with a BS in Computer Science, I have had to master most math and computer science course material. My experience is teaching math to mostly older teens and young adults. I will be there to direct and support the student; I like when the student works at the board or on the paper instead of me, so that they retain what is being taught.
