If they see a reason to want the knowledge, and see how it can expand their horizons, then they will be more open to learning. A common problem with individuals needing tutoring is that they sometimes do not think they have the "smarts" to learn the subject. My first objective is to show them they have the "stuff" to get it! For grammar, I would either find or create my own practice materials and we could go over whatever is necessary until I've decided that the student is making improvements or the student has succeeded.
