My comments on tutoring Literature : I enjoy deconstructing the building blocks of various kinds of literature (i.e. how it's structured and written). Whether is it an assigned class reading, an assigned home reading, or one I suggest, I can help the individual look at literature in a more healthily critical way. My approach is one that is peculiar to each of my students. As an auto-didactic learner, I believe that everyone has their own way of learning. Therefore, I use an approach that I feel works well for each of my students, with regard to whether a student thinks abstractly or concretely, for example. With so many possible goals, it is important to be flexible to work with each student's learning style. I present concepts with the idea that experience is the key to learning. I began my teaching career in South San Antonio, teaching at both the elementary level (K and 3) and at the middle school (6-8). At Shepard Middle School, I implemented a writing program that was credited with bringing standardized (TAAS at the time) scores up substantially, garnering our school a large monetary award from the state. After twelve years, I moved to the North East ISD, where I taught English at both Nimitz Middle School and Barbara Bush Middle School. I retired last June, but I still love working with children of all ages.
I believe in relationships first. If a teacher knows her/his students, she/he can usually find what motivates them and use that to gain their trust and interest. Having taught for as long as I have, I know of many different ways to reach students. A positive attitude and an easy going personality go a long way, and I am known for both.
