My comments on tutoring Reading Comprehension : Highly skilled in the use of Article of the Week as a means of demonstrating steps to achieve reading comprehension.

I have 15 years of experience teaching students at all ages and all ability levels. I have a Bachelor's Degree in English and a Master's Degree in Teaching. I am certified and highly qualified to teach English and History at the 6-12 grade level (and college). I am also certified and highly qualified to teach students with Emotional Impairments and Learning Disabilities. A great deal of my teaching career has been spent educating students in lock-down juvenile detention settings. I am passionalte about writing and have taught in K-12 for over 10 years. I have vast experience teaching writing at both high school and college level. I currently teach Composition classes at our local community college. I understand what is required of students to be successful in both high school and college. A Little Bit About Me...

I am a retired special ed teacher. I worked with Learning Disabled, Emotionally Impaired, Cognitively Impaired, and Austistic students primarily in the high school. I was an Assistant Principal in a middle school for four years, and a teacher consultant for 30 years. In my role as a teacher consultant, I tutored students primarily in the high school.
For the past 30 years, I have worked with special needs students. I believe that students learn at their educational level. The problem with education today, is that students are often in classrooms that stress learning at their frustration level. Dr. Segal taught us that traditional teaching methods are outmoded. Therefore I came to my own conclusion that as a teacher I would allow my students to confront me on their terms and make the learning experience as relaxed as possible. Students won't learn anything if A) the environment is unsuited to them and B) if you jump down their throat over every little thing. The important question to ask them is "why?" or "what do you think?" In regards to myself teaching is an avenue that I am considering and thus a bit of real tutoring would give me a taste of how I should go about teaching in the future.
