A Little Bit About Me...

I began tutoring high school and middle school students when I was a college student and high school soccer coach. Upon completion of my degrees and being awarded my teaching certification I began teaching in a high school math classroom. During my eight years in the classroom I taught all levels of math from Pre-Algebra through AP Calculus. The past two years I have not been in the classroom but have continued with tutoring, mostly high school and middle school students, but occasionally elementary and college students as well.
I believe that a good portion of teaching well is listening well. As I listen to my students' needs I am better able to help them through whatever may be frustrating them. I also believe that most every mathematics problem can be approached in multiple ways, and that not every student should be required to learn the same way. I love seeing students su ... read more

As a graduate of Cedarville University in Ohio, I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Electronic Media. Before I pursued a degree in Media, I pursued a degree in Engineering for 3 semesters. I've taken classes such as Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry in both high school and college. I often unofficially tutored other classmates who were struggling. At the time I switched out of the Engineering major, I had a GPA of 3.05. I was not doing poorly, I was simply looking for something I was more passionate about. I found that in Media. I decided to use that degree to pursue a career in screenwriting, so I am also strong in English and writing.
I love interacting with people. I like to think of myself as a people person and I've come to love teaching my classmates when they don't quite understand as well as I do. I think everyone has the ability to learn, it's just a matter of understand how we le ... read more

Helping students be successful is the most important aspect of teaching, in my opinion. Each student is unique in his or her learning style. A teacher's job is to find the way in which a student learns best and to encourage them to think on their own. Students must think about and discover for themselves in order for learning to be truly meaningful. I am someone who will help guide a student in this direction.

My basic teaching style utilizes a multimedia approach since different students learn in different ways (audio, visual, or hands-on). I like using simple “demo” experiments to show the “magic” of chemistry. Demos are then backed up by showing the chemical equations to explain what is actually going on. I also tend to use a lot of analogies, that students can related to. I access web information to help explain chemical concepts in creative ways. I also try to get students to think of problems as puzzles. I believe learning can be a fun experience as long as we never forget to ask the fundamental questions - "Why and How?"
