I was a senior scientist - engineer for 37 years. I retired to care for my comatose wife at home, and she died a few months later. This situation has left me open to new directions. I'm currently a student in school who has had a wide range of experience in various different subjects, specifically working best with mathematics, science and language arts in the elementary and middle school level. I'm familiar with I've been doing my best to educate myself in as best as I can, not simply for the sole purpose of filling a resume, but for the sake of learning.
When I teach, I try my best to be open minded, and to give choices to the student, rather than follow a closed-box cookie cutter curriculum. I've found it's important to find a personal way of learning for a specific student. Variety is important, because every child learns a little differently. Some kids learn by listening, others by seeing. Some kids learn only when they're making things. Encouragement and recognition when progress is attained by the student is a great incentive.

A Little Bit About Me...

As it has evolved over the years, my teaching style has become a mix of facilitation and direct instruction, with the goal always being the student's making his own discovery. I was trained in the Socratic style, which seems to match well with inquiry-based learning, and that is how my classes usually end up. I introduce activities, then gradually release them to the students to lead.
Over the last 15 years, I have worked in various different areas. First, I taught adult ESL, and had occasional tutoring gigs with Russian speakers learning English, and some English speakers learning Russian. Currently, I work as a special education teacher. Part of my job is to work in small ratios with honors students who have disabilities. This "study skills" class often requires one-on-one tutoring.
