Math is a series of steps that one must follow. When these steps are arranged correctly the problem fits together like a puzzle. It is essential to understand the lower level maths because these will be the pieces that are used to solve more complex math problems. I try to work through problems with a student explaining each step and why that step was taken.
I hold two degrees, a B.A. in Architecture which I achieved immediately following high school and a B.S. in Civil Engineering that I earned 20 years later. My first two years of teaching were as an intern with the University of New Mexico and Albuquerque Public Schools. I taught 8th grade Math full time at a large public middle school. The next year I continued the same position and added on an after school tutoring program for all grade levels. I then took a position teaching 6,7&8 grade Math at an alternative school for students with severe discipline issues. This was a small setting with classes no larger than 12. After completing my degree in 2007 at the University of New Mexico, I moved to Denver, CO and taught for one year at Morey Middle School. Since the school is only 5 blocks from the Capitol building and a multitude of museums and libraries, I was able to tutor a few students from the school in a real-world environment.
