I am flexible in my teaching style because of my experience with professionals and the general public, and because of the diverse topics that I have studied. I like to make a difference when someone wants to learn.
As an Associate Research Professor at Duke University I conducted research on the health of the elderly population and the genetic background to age-related diseases. I am well published, always serving as my own statistician. The background to most common disorders in adults is complex involving multiple genes, thus I used advanced fuzzy latent class analysis to identify high and low risk sets of gene variants and to define the level of risk for individuals. I have collaborated with graduate students and taught genetcs to medical students. As a co-founder and the scientific director of Matrix Genomics, Inc. I relate genetic concepts to others on a daily basis.

My style incorporates exercise kinesiology, developmentally appropriate materials and hands-on learning activities that are meaningful. In my high school classes, I gave students individual attention as much as possible. I enjoy solving problems - finding out and supplying what is necessary for a solution. Mathematics has taught me attention to detail and patience. I appreciate math on an abstract level and for its applications, and I work at communicating my love of math to my students. My two and half years of teaching math and physics in high school as well as 8 years of college teaching taught me a great deal about encouraging learning. I also believe that my ability to communicate makes me especially well suited to help students achieve academically. My experiences dramatically improved and expanded my communication skills since I was constantly meeting new people and discussing different topics. As an Electrical Engineering student at Virginia Tech, I tutored other students in all subject matter related to my field. I tutored for three years privately and one year at the Electrical Engineering department tutring center. Since then I have worked for about four years in my field professionaly. However, I have found tutoring is my real passion and am now pursuing this opportunity. Preference is Calculus and related mathematics but all Electrical Engineering material is acceptable.
My favorite age for tutoring is highschool to early college mathematics. I find that the values I have learned by becoming an engineer transfer greatly to sucess in mathematics.
