English ESOL is one of my top subjects! I spent two years (2012 - 2014) living in South Korea, teaching English to elementary and middle school students. I also received my certification for teaching English as a foreign language from ITTT (International TEFL TESOL Training) in 2012, after completing one of their more rigorous courses.

I have years of experience in varying forms of educations, but my most relevant is the two years (2012-2014) I lived in South Korea, teaching elementary and middle school students in English as a foreign language at a private academy. During that time period, I also tutored two adults in conversation, vocabulary, and diction. This experience led me to the decision to pursue a Masters in teaching, and until I complete that goal, I am going to keep my skills fresh with tutoring.
I prefer a very conversational approach with my students. The style encourages mutual respect and allows me to observe more closely how the student learns. In addition, I feel learning is absorbed better when the information is couched in a story, and I believe conversation is a style of storytelling.

A Little Bit About Me...

I currently teach to a diverse, at-risk population employing a variety of teaching methods. Many of my students are considered "gifted" after I teach them. My first grade students have reached as high as the 4th-6th grade reading levels. After one year of instruction, one of my piano students (age 6) was deemed a child prodigy during the National Piano Guild at Christopher Newport University. I have taught and been certified in four states. Grades 7-9 is the level I prefer, though I have taught at the Junior College level also. History is my major, and having spent much of my youth on the European continent with my father's duty assignments, it is easy to teach the events that have led to the present situations. English and education were my minors, and they have become essential living in an area where more Spanish is spoken than our native tongue. Also the impact of "computer english"has destroyed in many the ability to communicate in a formal manner, with language and vocabulary necessary to achieve success outside the academic sphere.

Students need to be equipped with the research skills and ability to fetter out information from a number of different sources. The information must be timely, accurate, credible, relevant, etc. The days of going to a library and pulling volumes of texts to research substantive information has changed. Now, most students understand what a Boolean search is. However, many don’t know much beyond the internet. This is both an imperative skill as a successful student, and as a potential graduate seeking employment.

I earned a BS in Business (CIS) with a cumulative 3.4 GPA and membership in two National Honor Societies. Courses included Chemistry, many Social Studies classes, and calculus-based Chem Physics. Briefly I taught Science and Math at a private high school in Albuquerque and did well, but quit because of a medical problem with my leg. After active duty in the Navy, I earned 8 credit hours in English through the CLEP test, and didn't take Freshman English. I had always made straight 'A's in English, and had excellent grammar. My style incorporates exercise kinesiology, developmentally appropriate materials and hands-on learning activities that are meaningful.
