**Fun, Creative Tutor Specializing in Math**

With a lot of subjects, especially math and science, students become discouraged because the content seems so useless. They are much more interested in their everyday lives than things like the Pythagorean Theorem. I try to break that barrier - to help students see how the things they learn in school can help them solve problems in the real world. I do this by making lessons creative, interesting and fun.

I have worked as an elementary school teacher for 7 years. I have been fortunate enough to teach grades 1, 2, 3, and 4. In my experience I have found that children build confidence through small successes. My philosophy is to set maintainable goals allowing students to meet them frequently building confidence and motivation.
I am structured yet kind. Kids need to feel a connection to their teacher in order to give 100%. I work a great deal on building community in my classroom and allowing kids to appreciate the diversity among themselves. Not all kids are going to excel in all areas. My comments on tutoring Reading Comprehension : I am an avid reader with a collection of over 300 books, but learning to teach reading was not easy for me! I worked hard at becoming proficient in helping students pick up on key themes and information, while still enjoying the story overall.

I have years of experience in varying forms of educations, but my most relevant is the two years (2012-2014) I lived in South Korea, teaching elementary and middle school students in English as a foreign language at a private academy. During that time period, I also tutored two adults in conversation, vocabulary, and diction. This experience led me to the decision to pursue a Masters in teaching, and until I complete that goal, I am going to keep my skills fresh with tutoring.
I prefer a very conversational approach with my students. The style encourages mutual respect and allows me to observe more closely how the student learns. In addition, I feel learning is absorbed better when the information is couched in a story, and I believe conversation is a style of storytelling.
