I begin by establishing rapport with the student, and usually I prefer a lighthearted, encouraging style of interaction. I believe every student is capable of learning, but may not have been shown the strategies and skills that will best suit them. I like to help the student identify their learning style, and then teach using strategies that will coincide with that learning style. From the time that I was in high school, I have been working with children. I began teaching through my church as their kindergarten-first grade teacher and did that for approximately 3-4 years. I then went on to college to earn a degree in Elementary Education. After college, I joined a non profit tutoring program in my home county. My experience in tutoring has shown me that everyone learns differently. Some students benefit from closely studying the textbook in a course, whereas others became easily overwhelmed reading large amounts of text and instead required a more interactive learning atmosphere based on discourse.
