As a Siena College graduate I developed a very hands on approach to active learning. Through classroom lecture and instruction I've completed the necessary coursework to complete my BS of biology. Due to my strong work ethic I've gained knowledge and skills in the physical sciences, as well as in other subject areas. During my college years I subbed as teacher at a public K-12 school. During that time I taught a variety of grade levels, and worked as a one-on-one aide.
I believe that in order to succeed in teaching and being an educator you must inspire those that you are teaching. A child who is excited to learn, will do much better. I feel a hands on approach is best, guiding the child to personal success.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a teacher for over six years. I have taught and/or tutored subjects ranging from elementary reading and math to high school math and science. I am permanently certified in New York State to teach Biology and general science. In addition, I am pursuing certificates in both physics and math.
I like to combine both direct instruction and hands-on activities when teaching. I believe that allowing students to apply their learning to real-life situations helps them to both find meaning in their learning and attach the learning to a memorable experience. I get really excited about the subjects that I teach and my excitement carries over to my students. And, when students are excited about what they are learning, they want to continue to learn more about that particular subject.

I have always loved helping people, especially in the way of education. I believe that everyone learns differently, and therefore strive for diversity in teaching. I will exhaust all possible strategies, incorporating meaning and practice with all dimensions of learning to bring not only an undertanding of content, but an appreciation and means of applying newly gained knowledge in real world situations.
Having completed my B.A. in Mathematics, with a minor in adolescent education, a Computer Science degree, and graduating with a 3.65 GPA, and a 4.0 in content has fueled my success. Combining that with presently finishing my Masters in Teaching with Technology, three years of teaching mathematics and 5 years of tutoring experience, in which I tutored several subjects I feel that I have a lot to add to the success of students. To go along with my education, I have completed several ... read more

I enjoy tutoring Math because I feel comfortable in giving students an alternate way of understanding the subject outside of their textbook and teacher. I like to introduce to the student alternate ways of “thinking”. Introducing applications of where math is needed or helpful I believe always helps the student learn. In my opinion this is true for all Physics or Electrical Engineering students. I like to take the time with students one-on-one because that was something I didn’t easily have access to as a college student recognized after how much help it could have brought.
I worked a year in the Tutoring Department located at Mohawk Valley Community College. This was an open lab which meant 3-4 students would need help at any one particular time period. Subject Help that I was required for involved Pre-Calculus, Calculus (I & II), Physics, Algebra, Trigonometry and basic ele ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My first career was as a Registered Professional Nurse (NYS licensure) for 25 years. During those years, I kept up my interest in various fields of math, such as Abstract Algebra, Differential equations, and topology. I was especially interested in algebraically-capable computer math programs. I,eventually, went back to school for my Mathematics degree as part of a long-standing interest in and commitment to Mathematics. I presently teach students who are "at risk" in the 7th through 12th grades and have done so for the last 10-11 years at OHM-BOCES. I have tutored the NYS Math B course for 5 years as well as the current NYS Algebra I/II courses.
All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (th ... read more

More About This Tutor...

While an undergraduate at a community college I earned three associates degrees, AS in Biology, AS in Chemistry, and an AS in Public Policy. I continued my undergraduate work at Utica College of Syracuse University and I earned a BS in Chemistry. I tutored on an off throughout my two and a half years at community college in subject areas such as chemistry, math, biology, economics and sociology.
I love helping people learn chemistry. Chemistry is a subject that seems very hard because it is a dicipline. As a tutor I will help students to develop adequate study skills. I will go over several problems with them to make sure they understand the material well enough to solve problems independently.

All students have different learning styles, and the greatest advantage of one-on-one tutoring or small-group learning sessions is that the instruction can be adopted to each individual student's needs. I am patient and observant, and encourage students to learn in ways that suit them best.
As far back as I can remember, I have always helped the people around me with their schoolwork: classmates, friends, family, anyone who is struggling unnecessarily. I enjoy teaching, and have been tutoring on a professional basis for well over 10 years now. I specialize in college level mathematics, but I have also tutored students in physics, chemistry, computer science, economics, engineering, and any related fields. I have tutored students in elementary school, high school, undergraduate and graduate level college, and occasionally professionals in need of assistance with some aspect of their ... read more

I believe that people have different preferred learning styles. Some are visual learners, some audio, some physical, and some use pure intellect. Often, class size prohibits even very good educators from catering to the need of each individual's learning style. It is therefore my job to present subject matter by whatever means necessary for my client's learning to flourish, and to facilitate their mastery of the material at hand.
The summer after my 8th grade year was my first experience teaching. It was there that I facilitated the younger children's use of the computer facilities during a summer reading program. After that I tutored Math, Earth Science, Physics, and Philosophy to other undergrads at my college's Learning Center. More recently I have been a coach of my own children's baseball and football teams, and a volunteer tutoring math and science at a local privat ... read more

Learning and teaching is my passion. In high school it ws teachers with the same passion that made learning fun and encouraged me to achieve academic success. Most any subject can be made interesting if approached the right way. Mostly it is about patience and good respectful communication. I especially cherish working with young children who are usually starving for real knowlege, but are lacking the opportunity to engage their minds in a meaningful way. I have found that with kids, you get back in effort what you put in.
In college, I in part supported myself by tutoring in math and organic chemistry. I have earned a BS in Biology and a Doctorate in Medicine (but I am retired from clinical practice). My education has given me expertise in the areas of biology, chemistry, math and anatomy. I have supplemented this knowlege with self study in grammar and creative writing. I have wo ... read more

For six years as a college professor or lecturer and five years as a graduate student teaching assistant, I have found teaching chemistry to be the most enriching facet of my scientific career. Of my many experiences, however, I have found none quite as demanding or reciprocal in reward as a lecturer at the University of New Hampshire and then an assistant professor at Hartwick College. Having forty students observing you and learning from you for fifty minutes each class is quite formidable. For the past six years, teaching has been tough and dynamic, but the reward of taking part in student learning is worth the effort.
Through teaching at UNH and at Hartwick, I have developed a cogent teaching strategy. First, incorporation of everyday examples is critical for students. When students are shown how concepts discussed in class can be applied to everyday situations, they become ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Tutoring is one of my best skills, its just something I do well. I’ve tutored k-12 for Amsterdam, Gloversville and Johnstown in almost any subject, I have a strong math background particularly in algebra. I’m a good writer and do some freelance writing online at times. I have some experience with computer applications such as Photoshop, MS Publisher and PowerPoint. My BA. degree is in economics with a minor in business, I’ve completed some courses in graphic communications and have taken psychology on a graduate level. I’ve also homeschooled my own son for a year. He recently posted a 4.0 GPA at FMCC.
I enjoy tutoring enough to do it for free, which I have done for my friends from time to time. I’m a friendly laid back person who loves to learn and help others learn, particularly in a one on one setting. I’m quite good at breaking a subject down into an understandable step by step ... read more

I have more than 30 years experience working in many aspects of the Information Technology field. My job titles run the gamut of Application Programmer, System Programmer, System Analyst, Software Engineer, Department Manager, Director of IT, and IT Consultant. Industrywise, I’ve enjoyed working in Manufacturing, Distribution, Retail, Product Development, and Health Care. Also, I’ve had an avocation working with youth through the American Youth Soccer Organization as a coach, official, and administrator. Life moves fast, learn and enjoy as much as you can.
I teach with enthusiasm and enjoyment. A large whiteboard or table space for legal pads is a must. Students need to visualize concepts to grasp them. All errors are learning experiences, life is 'trial and error'.

A Little Bit About Me...

While completing my teaching degree I taught for three years with troubled youth. Subjects were regents level and the subject was earth science and algebra or course I as it is called in NY. I have also taught Summer school at the Allen Center in South Kortright which can be a tough crowd to work with. During my undergraduate studies I tutored chemistry and biology. I also taught 8th grade physical science in Prince George Virgina.
In science and math the learner has to practice much like learning to play a musical instrument. It helps if you can bring real world applications into the classroom so it is meaningful to the students otherwise they feel like they are learning something just for the cause of learning.

There is no one teaching style that works for all learners. It is important to provide a variety of learning styles to reach all the learners. Both inductive and deductive approches allow for children to discover and be creative which is exciting and rewarding for the learner and the teacher as well. I strive to make the learning experiece a lifetime endeavor not just a classroom activity. I love teaching and learning.
After College I spent 8 years at a College Prep School Schuyleville, NY where I taught NY State Regents Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Algebra. I also taught Earth Science there and was a dorm supervisor. In 1980 I took a job with the NYS Division For Youth as a Math/Science teacher for incarcerated youth at risk in a residential program. I was relocated to a School For Boys in 1983 where I instructed Biology,Earth Science, Living Environment, Gen. Math, Algebra ... read more
