My tutoring experiences have taken on many shapes and sizes. My initial foray into the tutoring sphere, so to speak began when I was brought on as a High School volunteer to lead residents of a retirement home toward a better future in computer literacy. To teach reading, I teach the children to use all the reading strategies used by good readers.Examples of those strategies would be sight words, visual and context clues, and phonics. Then, I prefer to use leveled readers to improve their fluency and comprehension. For writing, after assessing their composition, I work with them to improve where needed skills such as organization, elaboration, complex sentences and transitions. I use hands on materials and lots of practice to teach math. I taught grades kindergarten, first grade and second grade for a total of twenty-six years. Since then, I have tutored pre-k through 5th grade. My last assignment was tutoring a fifth grader in writing composition. I try to avoid lecture in teaching. For me, personally, instruction comes from helping the student understand the material on their own without having to directly be told everything. This comes through in creative exercises that help the student to understand the concept better and to hold onto the idea much easier. I have experience teaching not only at the college level, but also for grades 6-12. I was an English teacher during my most recent stay in France and I've tutored Accounting at Houston Community College.
