About Me

Experience Summary

I received a Master's degree from Stanford University in Educational Communication and another Master’s from Rutgers University in Educational Psychology. I have more than 30 years of experience tutoring one on one and teaching large and small groups at all levels, from elementary school to college. I teach because to me, teaching is a learning process in which all involved are transformed and become better human beings. I love teaching because I love learning, and my ideal as a teacher is to pass on this love to my students. *Resume will be sent upon request.

Teaching Style

I love what I do. As an educational psychologist, I use a variety of techniques and tailor programs to suit the student’s learning style and level of proficiency. I have had great success teaching dyslexic students, English and Spanish as second languages, and helping prepare students for standardized tests such as the STAAR, SAT, ACT, TOEFL, and TEXES certification exams. I teach reading and writing because I am a good reader and writer, and I know how to help others develop these abilities. I also have a deep understanding of the grammatical structures of two languages, English and Spanish. I can make the most difficult grammatical concepts seem very easy to understand. Reading and writing are fun when you become skilled at them, and with my help, my students get there in no time at all. I do a great job tutoring children. I teach them by playing games, doing fun exercises, watching videos, and developing online vocabulary and spelling drills. I do not consider the learning of a language as an end in itself but as an exercise in communication and learning about other cultures, something so necessary in this globalized world.

My Hobbies

I love reading, writing, listening to music, socializing with my friends, listening to music, and volunteering to help the needy.

Other Comments

Dyslexia Qualifications: I have a Master’s from Stanford University in Educational Communication and another Master’s from Rutgers University in Educational Psychology. My major for the latter master’s was cognitive processes and language development. I have graduate credits in the information processes approach to cognition (reading and perceptive processes) and dyslexia. I received training from the Dyslexia Training Institute and graduate credits in dyslexia courses from the University of San Diego. I am trained in The Barton Reading & Spelling System, which is a one-on-one tutoring system that will greatly improve the spelling, reading, and writing skills of children who have dyslexia. For students who need to develop pre-reading skills, I use the Foundations in Sounds program with great success. It is a pre-reading program which develops the necessary skills of discrimination, memory, and sequencing of sounds. Both the Barton System and the Foundations in Sounds program are Orton-Gillingham based. I have experience teaching and tutoring elementary school dyslexic children in English, although since I am bilingual, I can speak to my students in the language they prefer to speak. I use a multi-sensory approach. I teach by using fun games, and I develop online vocabulary and spelling drills. My students actively participate in their own learning. Most of all, I use plenty of positive praise and rewards, so that their self-esteem is greatly improved as well.
