A Little Bit About Me...

I am a recent graduate from University of Utah with a degree in Asian Studies, Chinese Language, and International Relations. I was born and raised in Okinawa Japan and went to a local Japanese school. My first language is Japanese and English and I am able to teach any level (beginner to advanced), including Kanji. I also work at the Utah Japanese Language School teaching 4-5 year old kid. My total teaching experience is a little over 5 years. I love watching my students improving and becoming more familiar with Japanese language as well as Japanese culture!
I'm very energetic and easygoing, but also can be serious depending on the learning style of the student. I am also very organized and love creating teaching materials that suite each student. I have taught Japanese for 3 years to those ranging from no knowledge whatsoever through intermediate learners. Lived in Japan for 2 years and continued study of Japan with my bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University. I have a broad knowledge of the Japanese culture and of the history of Japan. I have experience in translation of written documents (books, newspapers, etc) and in real-time translation of speech. As a Mormon/LDS missionary I attended the LDS Mission Training Center and then spent 2 years in the Tokyo area. I studied and spoke Japanese daily. I taught a message in Japanese daily. Also I spoke to congregations in Japanese regularly. Following that time, 2004-2006, I studied at BYU (acclaimed for its language success). Here I have earned 20 credit hours of Japanese with an A- average. I am not fluent but I am very good.
I believe teaching is a noble profession. As a missionary I was a teacher for two years. There was a specified message about Jesus Christ and the incredible potential of mankind. Also, I taught English there weekly to natives (including a class for children only -- I made all curriculum up as we went). Ever since I was a child, I have loved education, learning, and especially teaching. I started my college career taking education classes. In most of my summer jobs, I have been a youth counselor and leader. I volunteered as a calculus math tutor at BYU. Serving as a volunteer in Japan taught me many things in culture, religion and ethnicity, as well as a foreign language. I trained missionaries learning the Japanese language and religious lessons. Two years ago, I started my dream of teaching in the elementary school and have enjoyed both 5th and 6th grade. I especially love teaching science and math.
