I've never met a "stupid" student. I see all people as capable, as long as they are willing. I find it easy to get a student interested in a subject when they have usually been bored in class. I easily create metaphors and practical examples for application of the subject at hand so the student can personalize their studies. I did my internship at Springville High School and Dixon Middle School. At Dixon I was selected to help teach adults about the computer. I have 9 children. I was able to teach each of them. Some of them have gone on to higher education and have scholarships. I still have some at home and enjoy teaching them.
I like the tutoring environment because I like seeing individual progress. It is easier to assess where the child is. I believe that the basics are essential to moving forward in education. Memorization of math facts makes it easier for a child to learn new material because he isn't bogged down. I don't believe enough emphasis is placed on arithmetic in today's schools. I believe that the basis of learning is understanding the principles of the subject. If a student has a thorough knowledge of the basics, then he does not need to rely on root memorization or luck to pass classes. I believe teaching and learning the basics are far easier than simply attempting to pass a test or earn a decent grade.
