My teaching style is flexible depending upon the needs of my student(s). Some students have disabilities that make drilling or repetition styles of teaching and tutoring difficult and tiresome, while other thrive on it. Others need hands on learning opportunities and problems to work through on their own. Regardless of the student’s need, I am a tenacious teacher. If one method does not seem to be working, I will keep trying until I find the right method for the student I am teaching or tutoring.
Throughout my undergraduate studies at BYU, I taught and tutored in Spanish for up 24 hours each week. I supervised 5 districts of students, 10 teachers and up to 65 students at one time, while still teaching in the classroom. Additionally, I graded papers for college-level business courses for several years. As part of this experience, I provided feedback on writing, grammar, and conte ... read more

I have long had a love of learning, which has most recently expressed itself in my earning a BS in Psychology from Brigham Young University. This area of study gave me experience in the fields of math and writing, as I had to perform and analyze numerous psychological experiments, which includes performing statistical calculations as well as writing reports on findings. My teaching experience began in high school, where I tutored a girl in algebra. I also spent two years in Russia as a missionary, teaching people about my faith. While there, I also held weekly English language lessons open to the public. In college, I was also a Teaching Assistant, where I gained valuable experience when I had to fill in and teach class for the professor.

I believe teaching is a noble profession. As a missionary I was a teacher for two years. There was a specified message about Jesus Christ and the incredible potential of mankind. Also, I taught English there weekly to natives (including a class for children only -- I made all curriculum up as we went). Now I work with university professors as a Student Consultant on Teaching (SCOT) for the Center for Teaching & Learning at BYU. Friends may describe me as enjoyably casual and patient. I know that learning can be difficult because of my time at a math and science academy in mid. school. Also, I feel knowledge/understanding is a source of peace and joy. I strive to improve the peace of conscience that comes when a person is fully prepared.

I recently graduated from Brigham Young University in April 2011. I am a graduate in Communications can help in English, Writing, Editing but also took AP Calculus and AP Statistics and passed both tests. I love math but feel that communicating through writing is very important. During the last two years I have worked at an Elementary School as Para Professional tutoring children in Math and Reading both in small groups and one-on-one. I love helping children learn!
Building a good relationship with a child is key to helping them learn. When good relationships are developed children can then trust the teacher or tutor to help them in whatever way possible. This relationship builds a good emotional bank account and children will do hard things when asked. I know that all children can learn. I have seen it while working with the wonderful children at the school I worked at.

I've never met a "stupid" student. I see all people as capable, as long as they are willing. I find it easy to get a student interested in a subject when they have usually been bored in class. I easily create metaphors and practical examples for application of the subject at hand so the student can personalize their studies. Once a student sees how the subject "fits" in their life, their interest level often changes.
With a Master's degree in counseling, I have had various experience working with youth on a clinical level. Before going into counseling I was on track to become a high school math teacher. As a student at UofU and BYU I tutored and was tutored myself. While attending BYU I worked in the student advisement center part-time, mentoring and helping students develop their schedules, and tutored them in subject matter from courses I'd already completed. I served as a volunteer representative for the LDS church for two years in Denmark and Iceland. I speak fluent Danish and Norwegian, and I taught extensively on many topics to all age groups while over there. I believe you can only help the student learn if you are willing to take time to "bend down" to their understanding and help lift them up. As a person that easily empathizes with others, it is natural for me to take time to understand the person who I am tutoring. Through building trust with that person I can naturally help them to understand what they may be missing or not understanding. Through helping the student know that I care about their learning at a personal level I believe that they will learn to trust and the teaching/learning relationship will begin to naturally occur.
As a recent graduate of BYU in Business Management (finance emphasis) I have been able to show excellence in my own school work. I prefer sitting at the student's elbow, with the assigned work in between us, focusing on it together. I talk about "it" rather than "you" to avoid making the student self-conscious. Writing can always be improved, and each student has areas of strength and weakness. I try to pick one area that needs the most attention, and focus on it. When there is significant improvement, I move on to the next area of weakness. Pointing out all of a student's mistakes and weaknesses at once drains morale, and that is counterproductive. Working on one area at a time keeps the student from being overwhelmed. I like to have the student read out loud to me, so that we can both see what needs improvement. I also point out what was done correctly to boost confidence. Goals are important, as well as establishing a time frame for achieving them.

After rising 3 children of my own I have come to realize that children learn at their own rates. It is important to encourage and persuade children to grow their skills. Often if learning is made into fun games and puzzles the children respond positively and will want to learn more.

I am a firm believer that the role of an educator is to help a child develop a passion for learning. For me, it is essential that learning is fun. With positive encouragement and belief in a child, I believe he or she can reach his or her potential.
My education is in business related fields. As a result, I have a good understanding of analytical subjects like math and statistics. I also am fluent in Spanish and have taken multiple hours of course work in grammar and Spanish literature. However, my experience as an educator spans over four years when I was a debate coach for a local high school. I am experienced at research and formulating essay style papers/positions and communicating effectively over a broad range of topics.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a master level graduate, I learned that I love to gain knowledge, the more I learned the more, I wanted to help other learn as well. I have always had a love for numbers and formulas and have enjoyed teaching accounting, algebra, finance, & economics.
I have always loved working with mathematics and numbers. I experienced different teaching styles in high schools and found that when you work directly with students they learn the best. I believe working on the blackboard and playing games with the students is the best ways for them to learn in classroom stitutations and working one on one in tutoring them
