Helping students learn and learn how to grow

My teaching experience is broad across subjects and age levels. Learning and teaching excite me and I like to think that attitude rubs off on my students. It can be fun to learn, and even those subjects a student does not find enjoyable, can prove satisfying. I've taught middle school and high school, as well as at Bellevue College, Renton technical College, and North Seattle Community College. My own experiences include not just teaching, but also professional broadcasting, journalism (both broadcast and print newswriting, creative writing, editing, and reporting), writing a book, supervising employees as well as students, and poetry awards.

I believe that all children can learn you just have to find their style. Each person has their own unique learning style. That is why tutoring can truely help students become better learners because a one on one approach can help them find their style and become their own advocates.
I knew I wanted to teach at grade 5. All my education from that time on was directed to become a teacher. During my graduate work at the University of Oregon I majored in Reading. It has become my passion to help all students love reading and become comfortable reading. This passion has been driven by the fact that I am dyslexic and understand how difficult it is to not be able to read well. Since completing my formal degree training I have worked in several capacities in the field of education. I taught inner-city young adults in Washington, D.C. in all GED subjects. I worked as a Guidance Counselor and Education Services Officer for the Army for eight years. In the past two years I have tutored under the auspices of Tacoma Community College in all GED subjects. Prior to my work with TCC I tutored in the Kid Reach program for three years.
