I have private tutored almost all throughout college, mostly because I had many international friends in desperate need for English help. I taught English in Korea; the first 5 months being beginner English (to preschool to fourth graders) and the last 7 months I taught actual subjects children in America learn but at advanced levels (from 3rd grade to late middle school). The way I teach is different for every grade level. I check out the book, get to know the student and find a path to which the child can learn easily and find the subject interesting, no matter who the student is. I don't give up easily. I am a fervent believer of Gardner's mutiple intelligences, because I know that each person has a unique learning style, and unique interests. Therefore I will do all in my power to discover each and every student's learning preferences, so that learning becomes a responsible, joyful experience. As a student I enjoyed most the teachers who facilitated learning. Teachers who lead students on a road of discovery as they learned, who taught me how to think and not what to think. I model my teaching after the same style I enjoyed as a student. Helping a student discover for themselves the material not only educates them but fosters a passion for the subject at hand. Rote memory has it's place and is essential, but when a student becomes passionate about a subject, then the door is open for them to excel at it.
